The Corporate Wellness Epidemic

A 2017 study by the non-profit group Mental Health America and the Faas Foundation found that over 70% of those currently employed are searching for other jobs.  The same survey uncovered that almost two-thirds of respondents reported that their current employment has “a significant impact on their mental and behavioral health” and almost as many indicated that, as a result of workplace dissatisfaction they have at minimum taken part “in unhealthy behaviors such as drinking or crying” on a regular basisOther studies have found that over 50% of American’s are unhappy with their work which has been on a steady decline from satisfaction rates just three or four decades ago.

We could go on and on but the reality is that – in the vast majority of cases – the situation is not improving.

Unhealthy work environments lead to unhappy employees.

Unhappy employees are bad for business!

Unhappiness at work can adversely impact health and relationships.  Individuals dissatisfied with their work tend to be more susceptible to obesity and will more frequently miss work for appointments or illnesses. Furthermore, stressors from the workplace can also impact their family relationships, their mental health as well as increase risks for chronic illness and heart attacks.

So what can you do?  How’s about a few more studies for you.

Employee Wellness 101

A 2010 study by Towers Watson Wyatt (now Willis Towers Watson) and the National Business Group on Health uncovered that organizations with strong employee wellness programs reported substantially less voluntary attrition than do those whose programs are weak or non-existent. Additionally, Johnson & Johnson conducted an internal review and discovered that the ROI on their worksite wellness programs was $2.71 for every dollar spent.  The end result was a combined savings of $250 million on health care costs over a ten year timeframe.  It’s clear, employee wellness programs work!

As organizations become more aware of the need, they continuously become more inventive and robust with the assortment of offerings in their wellness programs.  Among them, an increasing number find that offering Yoga to their employees is a cost-conscious, preventive and holistic healthcare approach which effectively makes the discipline a resounding success with HR departments looking for returns on their program investments.  Yogi’s (the title given to those practicing Yoga) emphasize its many benefits including emotional health, improved physical strength, flexibility, balance and postural alignment.
